I cam to relish the relaxation (savasana) at the end of a yoga class. But yoga held me steadfast as I rode the waves of living overseas away from family and friends.Īfter returning to Adelaide, I started practising at my local studio (shout out to Kanti Yoga!) while working full-time at a lobbyist firm (yea, I did that too). While YouTube was awesome for exploring these practices without being afraid of what other people think, I did eventually begin to crave the community and connection of like minded individuals.įrom there, I attended studio classes around Adelaide, even living in Germany where I Au Paired for 6 months (yoga classes in German are hard…when you don’t speak German well!). It was a whole system that encompasses everything from breathing techniques (pranayama), to meditation and thought-provoking philosophy. I soon realised that yoga was so much more than just physical movement (asana). And I began to really look forward to my practice! I started to roll out my mat daily, even for just five minutes. So, I started doing free classes on YouTube to build confidence. Not that there is anything wrong with that type of yoga, a lot can be gained from it! I thought yoga was all about being flexible and muscley and doing crazy pretzel poses. Never having been an athletic person, I was hesitant to attend a real-life class for fear of never being good enough (which made no sense, how can you be good at something you’ve never done before? But that’s how my brain worked). I never thought that the teachings of the yoga system could also help me manage my mental and emotional health. I found yoga while seeking relief from back pain, as I was an eyelash extension technician (yep, you read that right, I did that) and I spent all my days hunched over.
